What are the stains? How can they be removed?

Gloeocapsa Magma is the algae that creates those
black stains on your roof. The algae has a tiny root
systems that works their way into the pores of your
roof wearing off the granules and weakening the
fibers thus shortening the life of your roof. The algae feeds on crushed limestone used in common asphalt shingles. The longer these growths stay on your roof the more damage they can and will cause. Not only are the stains unsightly and damaging they also can increase energy cost and may cause health problems. The black stains can be effectively removed, extending the life of your roof

Contributing Factors: - Black fungus requires three things to grow: heat, moisture, and a nutrient.
Nutrients can be found within the shingle themselves while other variables contribute to and hasten
fungus growth. The north side of the roof is usually the first to exhibit staining because the moisture
remains there longer. Add to that, the type, grade and manufacturer of the shingle, the age of the roof,
the close proximity of trees, pool, or lake, how hot and humid the weather is and if there are leaves
accumulating on the roof. Now, you have most of the answer to the question why your roof turns black.
